I want to use the best technological tools to increase media literacy within my sphere of influence, whether through art, entertainment, or education.
I relish technological advancements in media and look with excitement toward the transition from a print age to a visual age of communication. I do not believe in discarding knowledge from the past in favor of the "new and better," but in taking the best from each medium and era for the benefit of cumulative human knowledge.
Moving image studies will be critical in the visual age. Citizens of the global community and employees in the global marketplace will need to know how to read and "write" images as well as text. My passion is the education of these citizens and employees through classroom instruction (physical and virtual) and artistic expression utilizing multimedia—video, audio, text, and computer languages.
When I am not watching, making, or writing about media, I am probably cooking.
A short documentary about the artist Joe Gagnepain's struggle to bring art to his community.
Festival Screenings:Video commissioned by the Lee/Ogle Office of Education for training teachers on how to deal with unaccompanied youth.
A comedic webisode about a robot attending college in an attempt to better understand humans.
I love teaching. I've been teaching one thing or another for ten years. As a teaching assistant at Northern Illinois University I have gotten involved in online learning. I co-developed a video production course as a hybrid online learning experience, asynchronously delivering lectures via podcast and teaching the technical production skills face to face. The face to face material is also supplemented by screencasts, made with Screenr, and a Twitter feed. We use Blackboard extensively in the class as well. I was recently awarded a grant which brought Camtasia Studio into the lab to increase the quality of screencasting for students learning.
I love making movies. I like writing, shooting, and editing. If I must choose a preference in the filmmaking process it would be documentary editing. All that footage is Michaelangelo's proverbial sculpture in the stone, waiting to be formed into something great. On the new media front, I'm interested in interactive or database narratives as the future of online storytelling.
New Media was a natural progression from my interest in moving image studies as media convergence continues. Speaking the languages of the Internet is critical to media literacy and communication. I'm a big fan of Wordpress and jQuery. Tinkering with Wordpress Theme Development eats up a lot of my leisure time—and more. I thought video editing was bad for making time disappear…
